…to sort out my courses for next year.
Well, almost, there are still a couple of issues i.e. prerequisite waivers and whatnot, to be sorted out. I’m almost there though, I plan to ring up within the next couple of days to formally enrol. How exciting!

Wednesday 10th November
…to start going through the course catalogue for next year.
I’m going to do a graduate diploma in Media and Communications. My undergrad degree, which I completed before moving to France, was in Linguistics and French.
I loved Ling at the time, especially phonetics and phonology, but I just can’t see myself pursuing it any further. The only place I can...
Tuesday 9th November
…to teach.
While revising emotions:
Me: Show me “happy”!
Kid: *Smiles broadly*
Me: Great!, now should me “sick”.
Kid: *pretends to vomit*
Me: Oooh, disgusting! Now, how about “angry”?
Kid: *Flails about weirdly*
Me: Um, what was that?
Kid: I’M PUNCHING A ROBOT, DUUUH!
Me: Well, alrighty then.
Monday 8th November
…to get a present from my friend, Anna, in wellington
Yay, she sent me a super cool tote bag decorated with snow flakes and also a 2011 diary featuring photos of antique quilts and sewing paraphernalia!!!
This concludes my birthday season. With the trip to Auckland and many meals, it was a pretty sweet birthday.
See you all next year.
Sunday 7th November
…to take advantage of the sunny weather to go for a walk around town.
I stopped in at my old work to catch up with some of the girls.
The central city is still pretty munted after the earthquake. These days, the crumbling buildings have been cleared away. So every so often, there’s just an empty lot where an office block or shop used to be. Navigating the streets...

Tuesday 2nd November
…to be laze around before school finishing off “High Fidelity”
I found it stashed away on the bookcase last week and decided to give it a go. I’m glad I did. It was a nice, light read with a generous helping of sarcastic, cynical humour. Right up my alley.
The “Barrytown” bit made me laugh. A lot.
I’ve added the film version to my...
Monday 1st November
…to spend the day with Melissa before flying home.
We shopped, we ate lunch and saw a movie.
“Eat, Pray, Love” is by far the crappiest film I’ve seen in a long while. It just seemed so long. And Middle aged. And patronising.
I could throw about some more negative adjectives, but the point is: don’t see it.
All in all, we had a great day....
Saturday 30th October
…to fly to Auckland for Melissa’s birthday!!!
Yep, three exclamation marks. I flew up in the morning and hung around while Mel and Adam got their super awesome new house all ready for the BBQ party that night.
The party itself was a great, laid-back affair with plenty of food, a few drinks and a bunch of Melissa’s family. I had fun catching up with...
Wednesday 27th October
…to Skype Bree.
Definite high light of the day. I haven’t talked to her in ages, let alone face to face (or as face to face as Skype allows). She’s working as a Nanny in Ireland, so we discussed the tantrums of our wee charges and the funny things they say.
It seems like a million years ago that we were battling our way through the Italian summer heat on...
Tuesday 26th October
…to teach.
Quote of the day:
Me: and can you explain what that word means?
Kid: No. It’s English and I don’t speak English because I am Korean. Koreans speak Korean, not English. That is an English word, not a Korean word and I am Korean…
Me: *Head desk*

Sunday 24th October
…to wooork.
Today I was left alone in the shop for the first time. In the five minutes that my lovely co-worker nipped to the bank, an earthquake measuring 4.8 shook the place up.
I will tell you for free that being in a room made of glass shelves that are packed with fragile items, is not a good place to be during an Earthquake big enough to knock out power to half...
Saturday 23rd October
…to work at the shop.
Today I:
Built a towel rack
Learnt how to print labels
Wasted approximately 30 minutes wandering around the carpark with a trolley full of cardboard looking for the recycling bin
Tastefully arranged some soap onto a cake stand
Learnt a lot about my new co-workers pets
Broke the printer
Discovered that the security cameras have a slight...
Thursday 21st October
…to start my new job.
It took me over an hour to get there. Somewhere between screaming high schoolers and smelly homeless dudes, I decided that I must dedicate my first few pay cheques to buying a new car.
Work itself was pretty much what I expected. “This is how to put through a sale”, “This is where we keep the stapler”, “Here’s...
