Wednesday 15th December …to take my last lesson on the year (woohoo!) Even though I’ll be picking up extra hours at the shop leading up to Christmas, I still feel like I’m winding down for the year. My last lesson went reasonably well. Today’s child didn’t freak out to the same extent about his sheet of stickers (ever though they were racing cars and, in my...

Saturday 11th December …to contribute to society by working in a gift shop. When I got home I found a message on the machine from my friend Emma (yes, having a best friend with the same name as me gets annoying sometimes). The last time I saw her in real life was a couple of days before I went to France, when she showed up to surprise me at my farewell dinner. That was well over a year...

Thursday 9th December …to get a call from the University. Apparently I have to rearrange a bunch of my classes for next year, as I have too many points, or something. LAME.

Wednesday 8th December …to discover my classroom covered in red ink. One of the wee darlings had taken to the place with a red board marker. The floor, walls, table and chairs. I bet someone had extra vocab words after that particular outburst. There is now only one more week of classes before the summer holidays begin. I was feeling a little sad about the fact that, due to my other job,...

Tuesday 7th December …to start reading “The Tea Rose” by Jennifer Donnelly. I wasn’t feeling well when I woke up this morning, so opted to take things easy before taking my afternoon classes. “The Tea Rose” is another novel that I found on my Mum’s bookcase. Having been away for a year, there are still a lot of good reads lurking around the house for me...

Monday 6th December …to do a spot of shopping with Linda After the intense heat of yesterday, I decided that I needed to sort myself out for summer and buy some damn shorts. Once our mission was complete, Linda and I headed to the gardens to wander around. We sat by the river and waved at the tourists as they floated by on their canoes and generally enjoyed the sweet summery vibes of the...

Wednesday 1st December …to be informed by the University that the diploma I am going to start studying for next year does not, in fact, exist. What the heck, people? They stuck by their story too, even after I pointed out the page, paragraph, column and line in the enrolment handbook that clearly states that the Media department does offer a GradDipArts course. This is definitely...

Tuesday 30th November …to lol. Me: O.K, great work! Would you like to play a game now? Kid: Uum, no. Me: Really? How about the dot game? Kid: No… I have to… *leans closer and whispers* P. Me: You need to pee? Kid: No, P…O…O… Me: Oh? Kid: No, silly! It only has two O’s! I don’t think it comes across as funny when it’s in writing, but...

Monday 29th November …to get a note from my friend Bree aka Snowy. After collecting presents and letters from a few friends, I sent her a care package for her birthday. She was writing to let me know that it had survived the journey from New Zealand to Ireland, where she is currently living/working. I sent Bree some Merino/Possum gloves. They turned out to be the perfect gift as she had...

Saturday 27th November …to have a surprise lunch date under a tree with my friend Maria! Yay, she just happened to wander into the shop just before lunchtime. It’s so cool when something nice and unexpected happens to take a workday from normal to fuuuun.

Friday 26th November …to realise that it is now less than a month until Christmas and to assume my usual festive Bah Humbug-esk attitude accordingly. I work in a gift shop and have found that most people’s Christmas sentiment is in line with my own. The consumer driven Christmas ‘thing’ has frustrated me for years. I’m not sure how I’ve ended up so jaded at...

Thursday 25th November …to get an email from the university. In order to properly enrol, I must go on a scavenger hunt to collect signatures from various important people. This is turning into a pain in the arse.

Wednesday 24th November …to apply to enrol for next year. I have tentatively signed up for classes and am now waiting to hear from the relevant departmental heads to see if my previous grades will grant me access into the course and if I am allowed to flag several prerequisites and jump straight into 200 or 300 level papers. Fingers crossed, all should be sorted soon enough.

Tuesday 23rd November …to get charged child fare on the bus. TWICE. I’m 23 dammit! I know I shouldn’t complain too much, my youthful face did save me about .80c.
